In the basketball game, athletes must fight against the clock.Due to its high-intensity and high-speed sports characteristics, the emotional state of basketball players is easily affected by various stimulating factors on the basketball court, making impulsive behavior such as irrational decision-making and attacks. Therefore, choosing an appropriate and effective emotional regulation strategy can help athletes better adjust their emotions, reduce impulsive behavior, and improve their performance. This study used questionnaires and behavioral experiments to explore the effects of cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression strategies on impulsive behaviors of different sensation seeking athletes under different emotional states.Impulsive behavior includes two aspects: impulsive decision making and impulsive action. Therefore, the study is divided into a pre-study and two formal studies:The pre-study examines the applicability of the "Sensation Seeking Scale for Chinese undergraduate" in the athlete group. The research object is 456 athletes. The reliability and validity analysis results show that the questionnaire has good reliability and validity, and the applicability is better in the athlete group.Study 1 used a delayed discount task to explore the influence of emotion and emotion regulation strategies on the impulsive decision-making of different sensation seeking athletes. The study participants was 98 basketball players. It turned out:(1)High-sensation seeking athletes have a greater rate of delayed discounts and are more likely to make more impulsive decisions;(2)In the positive emotional state, the difference between the impulsive decision-making performance of high-sensation seeking athletes and low-sensation seeking athletes is not significant; In the negative emotional state, the high-sensation seeking athletes' delay discount rate is significantly greater than the low-sensation seeking athletes, making it easier to make impulsive decisions;(3)In the negative emotional state, the high-sensation seeking athletes using the expression suppression strategy, the delayed discount rate is greater than the high-sensation seeking athletes using the cognitive reappraisal strategy, and it is easier to make impulsive decisions;for low-sensation athletes, the impact of cognitive reappraisal strategy and expression suppression strategy on impulsive decision-making under negative emotions is not significant.Study 2 used the stop signal task to explore the influence of emotions and emotion regulation strategies on the impulsive actions of different sensations seeking athletes. The study participants were 101 basketball players. It turned out:(1)High-sensation seeking athletes' stop signal response time is longer than low-sensation seeking athletes, making it easier to make impulsive actions, and behavioral inhibition is more difficult;(2)In the positive emotional state, the difference between the high-sensation seeking athlete and the low-sensation seeking athlete's stop signal response time is not significant; In the negative emotional state, the high-sensation seeking athletes' stop signal response time is significantly longer than the high-sensation seeking athletes, and it is more prone to impulsive actions, and behavioral inhibition is more difficult;(3)For high and low sensation seeking athletes, the effect of using cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression to regulate emotions on athletes' impulse actions is not significant; However, compared with high-sensation seeking athletes,low-sensation seeking athletes using expression suppression strategies has a better effect on impulsive actions, shorter signal response, and better behavioral inhibition.Under the conditions of this study, the following conclusions were drawn:(1)The "Sensation Seeking Scale for Chinese undergraduate" has a good applicability in the athlete group;(2)High-sensation seeking athletes show more impulsive decisions and impulsive actions than low-sensation seeking athletes.(3)In a state of negative emotions,high-sensation seeking athletes is more likely to make impulsive behaviors, manifested as “short-sightedness” and difficulty in behavioral inhibition;(4)In the negative emotional state,high-sensation seeking athletes can use cognitive reappraisal strategies to adjust the influence of their emotions on impulsive behavior;low-sensation seeking athletes to use cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression strategies can reduce their own emotional activation levels, reduce impulsive responses, and promote impulsive behavior inhibition, and the expression suppression strategy is slightly better.
