In the twenty-first century,the competition among the countries around the world focuses on the competition of knowledge.It is absolutely the competition of education,the competition of talents as well as the competition of productive power.A new round of basic education curriculum reform has been carried out.Teachers are the direct participants and play a main role.Therefore,it depends on the teachers and their professional qualities whether the new round of the basic education curriculum reform will be successful or not.Based on such basic concepts as "key competencies" and "professional development",this paper analyzes the connotation of the professional development of geography teachers in middle schools.The questionnaire survey for the middle school geography teachers of Fujian province(mostly in Fuzhou)and some other provinces was also carried out with such methods as document research,questionnaire survey,and empirical analysis.According to the results of the survey and the interview and combined with my ten years of educational practice and personal experience,comparison,induction and analysis were made about the situation of the middle school geography teachers'professional development and the present problems.Thus,on the basis of the analysis and research,the strategies on developing middle school geography teachers'professional accomplishments are put forward based on the core qualities,that is,by means of the government,society,schools and geography teachers themselves.First,build policies and systems to guarantee and strengthen the construction of teachers.Second,increase the investment of educational funds and build teachers' training system based on key competencies.Third,make the best of the advantages of teachers'assessment and evaluation to standardize teachers' preparing lessons in groups,and intensify the practice of teaching and learning.Forth,strengthen the ability and awareness of professional development and improve the professional accomplishment of geography teachers in all respects.What's more,in combination with the municipal level teaching practice "water circulation in nature",the paper further explores how to promote the professional development of geography teachers on the basis of "key competences" in the following means,that is,"integrating education and teaching resources to improve teachers',information attainments","constructing the framework of subject knowledge to optimize the structure of teachers' professional knowledge","Contacting life to promote understanding as well as strengthen teachers'and students'sense of social responsibility",and "reflecting teachers'professional spirits to cultivate students' practical abilities in geography.”Geography teachers should be strongly aware of the significance of professional development and actively apply it to guide their own classroom teaching practice.Only in this way can such awareness internalize the motivation of geography teaching practice and then form a resultant force to promote teachers'professional development.There are various ways for middle school teachers to develop their professions.As an ordinary middle school geography teacher,one should choose the most suitable way for his own professional development.Make further efforts about "strengthening the teaching inner work and enriching the education wisdom".Use the advanced educational and teaching concepts to guide the practice of geography education and teaching management and to promote the professional qualities of geography teachers so as to realize the professional development of teachers themselves towards the direction of"research type","scholar type" and "expert type".
