From Private To Public:the Change Of Reading And The Possibility Of Constructing Public Space

In the history of human civilization,writing and reading,as the basic means of information transmission,knowledge transmission,civilization creation and cultural innovation,play an important role.A history of human reading is a history of human civilization.In most of the history of human reading,"reading" is a kind of private behavior,which bears the social function of cultural cultivation and edification for readers.However,in modern times,starting from the west,the way and function of reading began to be "public".With the popularization of education,reading gradually changed from individual behavior in study to public behavior in public places.Reading is also endowed with more functions of "enlightenment" and "social mobilization".Until the last decade,"the national reading",as a widely promoted top-down social activity,was in the ascendant in China.It not only effectively promotes the improvement of Chinese people's reading habits and the overall social and cultural atmosphere,but also provides a space for thinking about the expansion path of Chinese social organizations and public space.This paper,on the one hand,analyses the changing path of reading mode and social function from private to public on the basis of combing the human reading history.On the other hand,taking Nanjing,the advanced city of national reading,as an example,this paper conducts in-depth interviews with the government,public libraries,publishing houses and bookstores,and analyses the mobilizing ways and channels of the main body of national reading,and summarize the characteristics of public welfare,openness and sharing of reading behavior in the "National Reading Campaign".With the government as the main body and social organizations participating in the mobilization process,a public space with public places,public media,public,public opinion and other public sphere elements has been formed between the state and the society.This paper also explores the possibility of social work participating in national reading,and finds that they share common features in service objects and service values.And social work can improve the deficiency of national reading in terms of professionalism and organizational standardization,while national reading can provide assistance in expanding the edge of social work.
