“Empathy” in the history teaching method means that teachers explain the history by creating situations and presenting history materials to students,making them in the social environment of historical development.“Empathy” is not imagination,for it helps students understand historical figures’ actions and the historical context.According to the development of society,people gradually questioned the traditional historical teaching method.British and American historians and educators started to explore new historical teaching methods to break the view that history is useless,and the method of “Empathy” is one of their achievements.In the mid and late 1990’s,the “Empathy” teaching method was introduced into China.With the discussions of scholars and teachers on the front,it is gaining recognition and forming a widely accepted teaching procedure,which requires teachers to create situations and gather historical evidence,leading students to draw a comprehensive and tentative conclusion.However,in this teaching procedure,when it comes to practical teaching,there still have difficulties in gathering historical materials,resulting in the fail of using “Empathy”teaching method and cultivating students’ historical thinking.So,the application of historical materials and related case analysis are embodied in this paper to help the teachers who want use the method of “Empathy”.The paper applies mainly the method of literature research and case analysis.Firstly,the paper states what is “Empathy” in the history teaching method and its advantages and disadvantages,so as to discuss how to use it.Secondly,the paper analysis some usual problems in historical materials utilization,and make suggestions of what kind of historical materials can be chosen.Finally,the paper takes seven grades first volume official textbook as an example to make practice exploration and to make reflection and put forward suggestions in view of the case.Since the “Empathy” teaching method requires extremely high academic literacy,teachers must constantly improve their own discipline literacy,teaching ability and research ability.In this way,teachers can provide more research results on integration of“Empathy” teaching method into Chinese middle school history.
