To explain the resource of self-control failure, the researchers proposed the concept of ego depletion based on self-control research.A large number of studies have shown that ego depletion can lead to negative results, such as alcoholism, smoking, aggressive behavior, impulsive consumption and so on.Therefore,a means of looking for a method to relieve ego depletion is of great significance and physical exercise as an economical and effective way gets the attention of researchers.Moderate intensity aerobic exercise can improve executive function which is inextricably linked to the anterior cingulated cortex, and the anterior cingulated cortex of individuals before and after ego depletion will undergo significant changes. Then, whether moderate intensity aerobic exercise has a positive impact on ego depletion, and how its time course works. To solve the above problems, the study includes two parts.Study One Purpose The purpose of the study one is to explore the effect of short-term moderate intensity aerobic exercise on ego depletion. Methods To control the influence of exercise experience,188 subjects were randomly assigned to the high-depletion exercise group, the high-depletion control group, the low-depletion exercise group, and the low-depletion control group according to the physical exercise scale score. The exercise condition and the depletion state are the independent variables, and the stroop task performance is the dependent variable. Results In the high-depletion state, there is no significant difference in the correct rate of the exercise group and the control group on the stroop task,F(1,52)=1.89,P>0.05,but a significant difference in response,F(1,52)=18.39,P<0.05;in the control state, between the high-depletion and low-depletion group, there is no significant difference in the correct rate,F(1,57)=2.60,P>0.05,but a significant difference in response,F(1,57)=94.58,P<0.05.Conclusion Short-term moderate intensity aerobic exercise has a positive impact on ego depletion,it can effectively relieve ego depletion, improve work efficiency and ego-depletion aftereffect.Study Two Purpose The purpose of the study two is to explore the time-course benefits of short-term moderate intensity aerobic exercise on ego depletion. Methods To control the influence of exercise experience,72 subjects were randomly assigned to the 0min+15min exercise group, the 0min+15min control group, the 0min+30min exercise group,the0min+30min control group, the 15min+30min exercise group, the 15min+30min control group. The exercise condition and time course are the independent variables, and the stroop task performance is the dependent variable. Results In the exercise state, there are significant differences in the correct rate and the response, comparing the three nodes,F(2,33)=6.83,P<0.01,F(2,33)=6.33,P < 0.01;Simple effect analysis of exercise level found that under the condition of 0min,there is no significant difference in the correct rate of the exercise group and the control group,F(1,22)=2.16,P>0.05,but a significant difference in response,F(1,22)=48.22,P < 0.01;in the 15 min, there is no significant difference in the correct rate of the exercise group and the control group on the stroop task,F(1,22)=1.74,P > 0.05,but a significant difference in response,F(1,22)=75.20,P<0.01;in the 30 min, there are significant differences in the correct rate and the response between the exercise and control group,F(1,22)=9.09,P < 0.05,F(1,22)=69.15,P < 0.01.Conclusion(1)The positive impact of short-term moderate intensity aerobic exercise on ego depletion can last for at least 30 minutes;(2)Therelief of ego depletion in 30 minutes after short-term moderate intensity aerobic exercise is stronger than immediately and 15 minutes after exercise.
