Because of the popularity and the booming use of mobile phone,it has already become a common case for people using their mobile phones around bedtime. However, little research focuses on using mobile phones around bedtime. Moreover, previous research most concerned about the health correlates, while little considered the organizational outcomes.Besides, researchers have begun to discuss sleep in organizational psychology. With the importance of work engagement being emphasized,it is reasonable to connect sleep with work engagement, while related research is scarce. At last, researchers did not pay much attention to the moderators in either sleep literature or work engagement literature.Though recently researchers began to discuss the relationship between leadership and work engagement, they mainly considered the leadership as antecedents of work engagement, while few considered it as possible moderators. And based on Chinese organizations’ characteristics, paternalistic leadership may be a possible moderator.Because of the importance of these variables and the gap in research, this study tries to investigate how mobile phone use at bedtime influences work engagement, and to testify the mediating role of sleep and the moderating role of paternalistic leadership.Based on Ego Depletion theory and Conservation of Resources theory,we put forward twelve hypotheses. They are: Bedtime mobile phone use is positively related to low sleep quantity;bedtime mobile phone use is positively related to poor sleep quality;sleep quantity is positively related to work engagement;sleep quality is positively related to work engagement;sleep quantity mediates the relationship between bedtime mobile phone use and work engagement;sleep quality mediates the relationship between bedtime mobile phone use and work engagement;benevolent leadership positively moderates the relationship between sleep quantity and work engagement;moral leadership positively moderates the relationship between sleep quantity and work engagement;authoritarian leadership positively moderates the relationship between sleep quantity and work engagement;benevolent leadership positively moderates the relationship between sleep quality and work engagement;moral leadership positively moderates the relationship between sleep quality and work engagement;authoritarian leadership positively moderates the relationship between sleep quality and work engagement. The original sample consists of full-time staff having fixed working time.I sent out one-time surveys and received 104 useful responses, and for daily surveys we received 104,92,93,92,96 useful responses respectively. At last,I got 420 one-time and daily matched observations out of a possible 477,and the response rate is 88.05%.The final sample(N=70)consists of 36(51.4%)female and 34(48.6%)male,with an average age of 26 years. The empirical results show that all scales have good reliability and validity. We apply SPSS 18.0 to do regression analysis. The results show that bedtime mobile phone use is negatively related to sleep quantity and sleep quality respectively, sleep quantity is positively related to work engagement and sleep quality is positively related to work engagement, the mediating effect of sleep quantity is not significant, but sleep quality fully mediates the relationship between bedtime mobile phone use and work engagement.Besides, the regression result shows that the positive moderation effect of moral leadership on relationship between sleep quantity and work engagement is significant, while the moderating effects of benevolent leadership and authoritarian leadership are not significant, and the moderation effects of benevolent leadership, moral leadership and authoritarian leadership on relationship between sleep quality and work engagement are not significant. The last part of this paper explains the reasons why the hypotheses are supported or not supported and discusses the theoretical contributions, practical implications, limitations of this study and points out future research directions.
