This study aimed to explore the current status of the of 5th grade students'timbre perception abilities in Shanghai primary schools,and further discussed some background variables like gender,region,extracurricular music learning activities may affect this research topic.At last,suggestions were proposed to the timbre teaching and evaluation in primary school.This research was a survey study using stratified convenience sampling method to take 518 students out of 16 primary schools in J1 district,M district and F district as research objects.The research tools were developed as Timbre Perception Ability Test.The test structure contained four timbre perception test modules respectively to the single instrument tone,the single vocal tone,the combination instruments tones and the combination vocal tones.The formal test was implemented at the end of first term or in the beginning of the second term of research objects at fifth grade in primary schools.All the data from the test got conclusions as follow:1.On the whole,for the 5th grade students in Shanghai primary schools,theperformance of vocal tone timbre perception was better than the instruments tone,the performance of combination tone timbre perception was better than the single tone,and the performance of western instruments timbre perception was better than the national instruments.2.Among all three test districts,the best test performance of comprehensive timbre perception was M district,then were F and J1.3.Whether to participate in the music learning activities after class had a significant influence on the performance of the timbre perception ability of the 5th grade students in Shanghai primary school.?1?No matter the music learning activities happened outside school or after class but in school,this would contribute significantly to improve the timbre perception ability of the 5th grade students in Shanghai primary schools.?2?The more extracurricular music learning activities students took,the better timbre perception abilities they would have.?3?Sole participation to music learning activities outside school or music learning activities after class but in school showed no significant difference to the 5th grade students in timbre perception ability.
