There is a blank for domestic introduction about primary school Chinese teaching in South Otago District,the South Island of New Zealand.During the time as a volunteer Chinese teacher,I set out the survey on primary school Chinese teaching in South Otago district,in 2016.It was found that teaching Chinese in primary school in South Otago had achieved excellent results in such a short period of three years,but I have also found the problems of Chinese teaching in primary school in this area.If these problems can not be paid attention effectively and solved in time,which are will affected the development of Chinese teaching in primary school in the area.The survey will complement the regional study of Chinese teaching in primary school,in New Zealand.This paper will provide real data for understanding the primary school Chinese teaching in South Otago,training Chinese teachers and training local Chinese teachers in New Zealand.Meanwhile make corresponding suggestions for improving the Chinese teaching in primary school.I hope through this survey,it will show a rather comprehensive aspect of primary school Chinese teaching in South Otago district for the scholars of Chinese international education,and as a reference for the Chinese teachers who will work in this area.Firstly,through such survey methods as literature reviews,observations,interviews and questionnaires.Based on the research of current Chinese teaching in primary school of South Otago District,this paper selected three typical primary schools in South Otago District for an in-depth investigation,which are Rosebank School,Milton Primary Shool and St Mary’s School.Then,take a general investigation about current Chinese teaching in these schools.To explore the main achievements and problems which as a representative of primary school Chinese teaching in South Otago District in New Zealand.Finally,the author proposed relevant proposals on the existing problems of primary school in Chinese teaching in South Otago District.The survey found that the Chinese teaching of primary school in South Otago District that had a fine development in three years that in such a short period.And which achieved excellent results.Which are the primary schools start Chinese learning that got sustainable expand,Chinese learners increased steadily every year,Chinese teaching began to spread to different levels and the Confucius classroom was established in this district in 2016.However,at the same time,there are still six main problems that faced to in primary school Chinese teaching in South Otago District.For example,the insufficient of Chinese class hours;The Chinese teacher shortage seriously;Neither the insufficient of Chinese textbook,nor the Chinese textbooks are suitable for the local Chinese teaching;The Chinese teachers’ behavior lack of supervision;Classroom order cannot be guaranteed;Chinese activities are hard to carry out,and as it would be almost impossible to stimulate students’ interest effectively.In addition,the author puts forward to the corresponding teaching suggestions for make a improvement.
