Since Uzbekistan’s independence,the U.S.-Uzbekistan relations have experienced series of ups and downs in the initial engagements,close iterations,breakdown of relations and restoration of cooperation.This article has historically reviewed the development of bilateral relations between United States and Uzbekistan after its independence,including the contradictions and differences between the two countries.Based on which,it summarizes the characteristics of bilateral relations and attempt to evaluate the impacts of the evolution of U.S.-Uzbekistan relations.On the whole,the U.S.’s “enthusiasm” for Uzbekistan has a strong sense of pragmatism,and the need for strategic interests will often “conquer” the attention to Uzbekistan’s democracy,human rights,and free market economic reforms.The geopolitical position and environment define the dualism of Uzbekistan’ foreign policy.On the one hand,As a strong country in Central Asia,Uzbekistan has the ambitions to become a regional power;on the other hand,it is such a “small country” located in the heart of Eurasia Continent,where global powers are engaged in geopolitical competition.Consequently,to carefully survive,Uzbekistan’s foreign policy has always been full of contradictions.In the eyes of the outside world,it is somewhat too flexible and unpredictable.To sum up,being increasingly mature in dealing with powerful countries,especially the global powers such as the United States,Uzbekistan is able to maximize its own national interests by utilizing the intricate interest relationships among big powers.In the view of facts that Trump administration’s relatively “open” stance on ideological issues,and the internal reforms of Mirziyoyev,even though the bilateral relations will be difficult to rise as rapidly as the period in the aftermath of “9·11”,nor being interfered with values,ideological differences,and other issues in the first decade of the 21 st century.The steady development of the overall relations between the two countries can be foreseen in the near to medium term with the consideration of the geopolitical and economic facts.The steady development of the overall relations between the two countries can be foreseen in the near to medium term with the consideration of the geopolitical and economic facts.
