An Eco-feminist Study Of The Tragic Destiny Of Lolita

Lolita is a literary work with Eco-feminist color.Lolita narrates the abnormal growth of a girl.The experiences between Lolita and Humbert reflect the complicated relationship between man and woman,controlling and anti-controlling.Humbert's desire to control Lolita is governed by another great power,which is Lolita's femininity.The male-centered force of Humbert and his dual roles are deconstructed by Lolita,who represents the challenge from female's marginal position against malecentralism.From the eco-feminist perspective,this thesis analyzes and interprets the tragic destiny of Lolita.It firstly summarizes the status quo of research on Lolita at home and abroad,mentions the originality of this research and illustrates Eco-feminist theory,which is the theoretical framework of the research.Then this thesis analyzes the tragic fate of Lolita from women's relationship with nature,men and social respectively.Lolita is the incarnation of natural ecology,and suffers oppression and control from the male-centralist society represented by Humbert and Quilty.It also interprets the crisis of Humbert's spiritual ecology of having extreme desire in capturing Lolita(ecological dream of Humbert)and letting her lose female subjectivity,which contributes to the tragic puberty growth of Lolita in the end.Meanwhile,the social-ecological environment manifested by American social reality,the false and empty education plus the disharmonious family relationship,are all factors contributing to Lolita's vague philosophy of morals and values,and facilitating her to be controlled and deceived by the males.As a result,she is transferred from one survival predicament to another,which does not make any difference to her tragic destiny.Lastly this thesis points out the disruption of male-centralism.Lolita and her disobedient behavior,changing from traditional marginalized female towards male,have challenged this patriarchal society and reflected the brilliant charm of females.Her tragic destiny and struggles in soul are like roses that fade in an untimely pointand form a pathetic but shining clue in Lolita.This thesis helps readers have a better understanding of the social status and living conditions of the contemporary western females,and comprehend female's tragedy in the patriarchal society.In this way,people should realize the current progressiveness of gender equality.By reflecting the social realities and human nature,this thesis aims to arouse readers' concerns about the psychological mentality of the marginalized group in the society,especially the adolescents and the females.
