Lolita is one of the most controversial novels of the 20th-century. The story deals with an abnormal story that a middle-aged pedophile called Humbert Humbert who was the narrator in the novel desired for a 12-year-old girl named Lolita. Humbert had a bitter love experience with a girl named Annabel in his childhood. But unfortunately the girl died of typhus. From then on, Humbert was fond of the girls between the age limits of nine and fourteen after becoming an adult. To keep his secret, Humbert married Valeria who was an adult woman. The Humberts had to move to the U. S from Europe for the heritage given by his uncle, but Valeria told him that she loved another man and left him. Then he met and married the widowed Charlotte Haze in order to be near her 12-year-old flossy daughter. He considered murdering Charlotte many times for achieving his purpose. But Humbert didn't do it. As a result Charlotte was killed by a car accident. After the burying, Humbert took his stepdaughter on a grand tour across America. But Lolita escaped from his jealous protection, and he did not learn of her until two years later. She was married and pregnant. Then she told him that during her days with Humbert, she had been cheated by a famous playwright named Clare Quilty. Humbert found Quilty and murdered him. Then he was jailed and died of a heart attack before his sentence. Lolita died in childbirth as delivering.The structure, style, narration and significances of Lolita are very complex. The thesis tries to analyse the characters' personality and the causes that contribute to the tragedy of the protagonists in the novel with the theory of tragedy and psychoanalysis. By analysing these causes, we can get lessons so that such kind of tragedy will not happen in our real life.The first part is the introduction about the author Nabokov and his work Lolita, "tragedy experience" and Nabokov, literature review and creative points.The second part is the theory of tragedy and psychoanalysis.The third part analyses characters' personality and the causes that contribute to the tragedy of the protagonists in Lolita. Firstly, the thesis uses the psychoanalysis—personality structure to analyse the tragic figure Humbert. And then the thesis analyses the causes that contribute to the tragic figure Lolita.The fourth part gives some constructive suggestions to prevent such kind of tragedy happen in real life.The fifth part is the conclusion. It concludes that Lolita is a real tragedy. Humbert is a tragic figure, whose tragedy comes from his unsuccessful love experience, emotional deprivation and the struggles among his id, ego and superego. Lolita's tragedy derives from family causes, growth environment causes and educational systems causes.
