A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of Measures On Social Assistance Of Jiangsu Province

Under the background of globalization,the exchanges between China and the rest of the world have become much more frequent.In this process,legal translation is meant to play a significant role with legal activities inevitably involved.To make exchanges between China and other countries smoother,both central and local authorities have carried out the work of translating laws and regulations,which has provided a strong legal basis for the exchanges,at the same time,exhibited the achievements in construction of China’s socialist legal system.This project report is written based on the C-E translation of Measures on Social Assistance of Jiangsu Province.Aiming at the difficulties encountered in the translation process,the author analyzes the stylistic features of the source text and the causes of the difficulties,attempting to explore corresponding translation strategies.Precisely speaking,the major difficulties encountered by the author are at lexical and syntactic levels.The difficulties at lexical level mainly include legal terms,expressions with Chinese characteristics and fuzzy expressions;at syntactic level,sentences with “de”(“的”)structure and long and complex sentences.Under the guidance of legal translation principles of precision and consistency,the author puts forward the following translation strategies.The author translates legal terms by referring to parallel texts especially the superior laws and paraphrasing.When dealing with expressions with Chinese characteristics,the author adopts official translations and uses nominalization.As for fuzzy expressions,literal translation,supplemented with the method of addition or omission,is the main method used in the translation process.In terms of “de”-structure sentences,they are converted to clauses and prepositional phrases.When it comes to the translation of long and complex sentences,the author translates them,according to different situations,by following the original sentence structure and restructuring.Measures on Social Assistance of Jiangsu Province is an important part in construction and improvement of China’s legal system,through translating which,the author puts forward corresponding solutions to difficulties encountered in the translation process with an expectation to provide research materials and recommendations for legal translators and make a contribution to the study of legal translation in China.
