As a unique form of literature,picture books combine vivid pictures and concise words,and are good reading resources for children.The New Curriculum Standard gives teachers the right to develop high-quality education resources.More and more teachers introduce picture books into primary school classroom as an important supplementary resource of English teaching.However,how to guide students to read picture books effectively is a challenge for front-line teachers.The main feature of multimodal teaching is that teachers use various modal resources to assist classroom teaching and improve the efficiency of English teaching by stimulating students' multiple sensory experience.Many scholars at home and abroad have studied multimodal teaching,but there are many theoretical researches and few practical applications.Therefore,this paper studies the application of picture books in primary school English teaching from the perspective of multimodal theory.This paper takes the experimental method as the main research method,and adopts the research tool such as questionnaire to ensure thevalidity and reliability of the research.The main research questions are as follows:1.Can picture books teaching under the multimodal theory improve students' reading interest ?2.Can picture books teaching under the multimodal theory enlarge students' vocabulary?3.Can picture books teaching under the multimodal theory improve students' reading ability?In order to solve the above problems,this paper introduces how to carry out the primary school English picture books teaching from the perspective of multimodality theory through the specific teaching case of Following the Rabbit Series picture books firstly.Then,96 students in two classes from Huaiyin Experimental Primary School in Huai'an City are selected as the research objects.In the experimental class,primary school English picture books teaching is carried out from the perspective of multimodal theory,while in the control class,the traditional teaching mode is used for contrast experiment.Through experiments,the following conclusions are as follows:(1)Students' interest in reading is improved,and they enjoy the reading process more.(2)From the perspective of multimodal theory,the application of picture books can enlarge students' vocabulary obviously.(3)Picture books teaching based on multimodal theory improves students' reading ability.Finally,this paper hopes that more and more primary school English teachers can introduce the multimodal picture books teaching mode into the classroom reasonably,and provide new ideas for primary school English teaching.
