| Note-taking is an indispensable tool in consecutive interpreting, directly and largely influencing the quality of the interpretation.Inefficient notes may alter the transmission of the message, causing lack of fluency.Whether it is backtracking, repetition or improper pauses, all of these problems can be caused by errors in note-taking,which eventually result in dysfluency, hesitance, and poor performance. Therefore,it is of utmost importance to avoid these mistakes and increase the efficiency of the note-taking system. This thesis is a case study based on the mock conference speech held by Lian Ping: βCan China maintain a moderate economic growth in 2020?β,and looks into the problem of inefficient note-taking,discussing both its causes and coping strategies. The research method consists of a thorough analysis of the notes taken during the mock conference, contrasted with the original Chinese speech and its English interpretation. The main manifestations of inefficient note-taking can be categorized into three aspects:(1)Incomplete notes-caused by listening difficulties and condensed information;(2)Indecipherable notes β a consequence of symbol and abbreviation non-uniformity and messy layout;(3)Obscure notes structure β related to the influences of the source language and incorrect delimitation of sequences. This thesis also aims to provide relevant coping strategies to ensure efficiency in notetaking.Interpreters can ensure the completeness of their notes by improving listening skills and deepening prior preparation;the notes can become easily recognisable if the symbols, signs and abbreviations are uniform and the notes are simplified;interpreters can structuralize the content and increase logicality by correctly delimitating the sequences,in order to ensure a clear and non-obscure structure. This case study may serve as future reference for students and interpreters who encounter note-taking related difficulties and wish to increase the overall quality of their interpretation. |
