Interpretation is a complex interlingual communication activity. In consecutive interpretation, the goal of the interpreter is to convert the source language into the translated language accurately, completely, fluently and timely, and to convey it to the listener.Language itself has redundancy, and moderate redundancy can make the listener understand the information better and also reduce the output pressure of the interpreter. However, when redundancy is excessive, there will be tedious expressions, poor language fluency, and multiple repetition of information, which will reduce the interpretation effect and cause the fatigue and impatient of listener, and even the failure of grasping the key information quickly.Especially in Chinese-Japanese consecutive interpretation, due to the different language order between Chinese and Japanese, the influence of the source language order will easily produce excessive redundancy in the translated language.Meanwhile, since there are a large number of Chinese-Japanese homonyms in Japanese, and there are also Japanese words,Chinese words and foreign words,if the interpreter hesitates in the output,it will easily produce redundancy. This paper takes the People's Good Doctor Popular Science Interview Mock Conference as an example, classified redundancy phenomenon in this case into meaningless filling, word repetition, sentence redundancy and information redundancy by combining the definition of the concept of redundancy in information theory and the classification methods of previous authors.By transcribing and comparing the source language and the translated language, combining the different language sequences of Chinese and Japanese, the characteristics of Chinese and Japanese homonyms, and the notes of cross-communication,and reviewing the mental state and logical thinking in the translation process, the author analyzes the causes of the redundancy phenomenon from the source language listening stage and the translated language output stage one by one,i.e.,the source language listening stage generates redundancy due to insufficient logical grasp and improper note taking, and the translated language output stage generates redundancy due to unnecessary self-correction In the output stage, redundancy is caused by unnecessary self-correction,insufficient translation planning, and the pursuit of complete information. Finally, the author proposes five coping strategies for each cause, namely, balancing energy allocation, optimizing the note taking system, regulating interpretation anxiety, improving language habits and filtering information appropriately.Through the analysis of this case, the author hopes to provide some reference for Chinese-Japanese consecutive interpreters and help other interpreters to transmit information more efficiently and concisely, avoid excessive redundancy, and improve the effectiveness of the interpretation while ensuring the accuracy of the translation.
