Fluency is one of the most important criteria to assess the quality of interpretation, while disfluency is common in language production, which will be a hinderance in interpreting and prevent the audience from accepting and understanding information. Moreover, audience could even lost trust in the interpreter due to disfluencies. And interpreters will also feel nervous when confronted with the problems of disfluencies. Therefore, interpreters need to tackle the problems of disfluencies effectively. This thesis is a case study based on the Chinese-Korean consecutive interpreting conducted at the mock conference “Research on South Korea's Soft Power Construction Strategies”.The author identifies and analyzes three major types of disfluencies in the case:suspension, repetition and self-revision.After analyzing some interpreting examples, the author lists several causes of the disfluencies, including insufficient background knowledge and vocabulary reserve, inappropriate language transformation, difficulties in using words and fixed phrases, problematic note-taking strategies. The author also provides some coping strategies for those problems: keep the tempo at a moderate rate, optimize note-taking strategies, fully prepare before interpreting and try to be more flexible.Disfluencies are inevitable in interpreting, but practice and proper use of interpreting tactics can enhance the fluency of delivery. The author hopes this thesis can help interpreters to solve problems related to disfluency in the future.
