With the comprehensive development of the new curriculum reform(2018),many new requirements and challenges have been put forward for English teaching in rural junior middle schools in China. In the process of reform, some achievements have been made in rural English teaching. However, there are still some problems in English teaching in rural middle schools, such as focusing on the test scores and paying little attention to the use of English and so on.The new curriculum reform requires teachers not only to cultivate students’ core literacy in English, bust also to meet the needs of their personal development. However, most of the existing English classes in rural middle schools are still centered on textbooks and teachers. The development of students’ core literacy has not been paid enough attention. In addition, rural middle school students generally lack a good external environment for English learning, and they are weak in independent learning ability and do not develop good English learning habits. As a result, the English level and quality of rural middle school students are generally lower than those of urban students. Therefore, the improvement of English teaching mode in rural middle schools is particularly important. In recent years,as a new teaching model, flipped classroom is gradually promoted and applied in English classroom. To some extent,it has changed the traditional teaching mode in China.Teaching English in a flipped classroom is student-centered,teachers can train students’ independent learning ability, cooperative spirit and innovative ability by arranging students to study independently before class and combining cooperative learning in class. In view of the current situation of English teaching for junior middle school students in rural areas, the author adopts the flipped classroom teaching mode in English teaching for junior middle school students in rural areas, and proposes three research questions:1.During the implementation of English flipped classroom teaching mode, what are the rural middle school students’ opinions on flipped classroom teaching mode?2.What influence does flipped classroom teaching mode have on the English learning interest and English scores of rural middle school students?3.What impact does the flipped classroom mode have on the learning ability rural middle school students? This study takes Xiantai Junior High School(in Ye County,Ping Dingshan City,Henan Province)as an example to conduct a practical study of flipped classroom.A total of 140 students participated in the experiment. The experimental class of Grade 8(1)and the control class of Grade 8(2)were selected from Xianti Junior High School. Before the experiment, the author conducted an English proficiency test on the students of two classes to measure whether the English proficiency of the two classes was basically equal.During the experiment, the author studied the above three questions by questionnaire, experiment and interview. After the experiment, the author uses SPSS 22.0 to analyse the experimental data to study the problems and draw relevant conclusions.Through interviews and questionnaire survey, the author finds that flipped classroom can effectively improve students’ learning ability in junior middle school English teaching.Through questionnaire survey,it is found that students have a positive attitude towards all aspects of flipped classroom and it can enhance their learning interest to a certain extent.By comparing the pre-and post-test scores of the experimental class and the control class,it is found that flipped class can improve students’ English scores. The research results prove that the flipped classroom teaching mode is effective in rural middle school English teaching under the background of the new curriculum reform.Compared with the traditional classroom, flipped classroom can improve students’ English learning performance and learning interest, and is more conducive to the cultivation of students’ core literacy.
