To tell a good Chinese story was put forward by President Xi Jinping in 2013.In the complex international situation, telling a good Chinese story can improve the national image, which is an important part in the task of China's great rejuvenation.Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era when the international community is paying growing attention to China's development, but the murmur of “China threat theory” and “China collapse theory” still exists. At the present stage,it is particularly important for the world to have an in-depth understanding of China,in order to create a sound international environment for China's development.Due to its theoretical and practical significance,“telling the stories of China well” was emphasized in the field of cross-cultural research. The topic of this study is based on this background. This study selects “A Bite of China ?” as the research object, which has been widely praised at home and abroad. It is a successful case of telling China's stories well, and has cross-cultural research value. This thesis adopts the research method of qualitative research, and combines narrative theory, multimodal discourse analysis and Hofstede's cross-cultural theory to carry out narrative research from a cross-cultural perspective. This study is a new attempt to analyze multimedia discourses from a cross-cultural perspective. The innovative use of a combination of narrative analysis and multimodal discourse analysis provides new evidence for the feasibility of narrative research in multimedia discourse analysis. The following conclusions are drawn through the research:Firstly, the micro-narrative method is adopted through the documentary. The establishment of narrative space has always taken “family” as the unit, and the settings of suspense and conflicts in the storytelling narrative are regularly used.Secondly,in image construction, each modality does not exist independently, but has complementary characteristics.Different modalities are cooperated and interconnected with each other, which is demonstrated through the interaction of the three meta-functional meanings, namely representational meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning. Finally, the themes of the documentary reflect the common values of mankind, conforming to Hofstede's cross-cultural theory, breaking the shackles of cross-cultural communication, and achieving the purpose of telling Chinese stories well. This study has both theoretical and practical significance in cross-cultural communication field.Theoretically,it verifies the feasibility of combining narrative theory, with multi-modal discourse analysis theory to analyze the narrative process of non-images in visual text, which ensures the comprehensiveness and integrity of the theoretical framework.Practically, the results of this study can offer guidance to government publicity departments and the practitioners for choosing the best narrative strategies and image construction techniques in the process of shooting films for cross-cultural communication,so as to provide suggestions for telling the stories of China well in the field of documentary shooting.
