The main content of this paper is to classify and summarize the traditional Chinese cultural characteristics of the Chinese high-quality documentary A Bite of China 1(and its prolonged video)broadcast by CCTV,and interpret it from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis,so that international students can understand the cultural contents and then promote cross-cultural competence.The paper is divided into four parts.The first part is a summary of the current research status of multimodal discourse and documentary A Bite of China at home and abroad,using literature analysis,interdisciplinary analysis and content analysis summarizes the traditional culture,so as to cultivate the cross-cultural competence of international students.The second part distinguishes the confusing concepts of multimodal,multimedia,media and modality,expounds the connotation of multimodal discourse and explores its theoretical basis and sources from the systematic functional linguistics and visual grammar.Multimodal discourse is a phenomenon of communication by means of language,image,sound,action and symbolic resources,using a variety of senses such as hearing,vision and touch.The third part is the classification and interpretation of multimodal discourse from the aspects of “ritual harmony”,“homeland identity”,“historical glory” and “diversity compatibility”,which is reflected in the traditional Chinese cultural of documentary.The fourth part is the suggestions on how to cultivate foreign students' cross-culture competence by using A Bite of China,including its necessity,how to analyze contents like sacrificial culture and ancestral temple culture,analyze the narrative strategies of the interaction between pictures,subtitles and sounds,how to use mini-research and video production strengthen foreign students' cross-cultural awareness and develop cross-cultural competence.In addition,the paper also provides six suggestions for teachers' multimodal teaching,which can enrich the teaching resources of TCSOL and promote the prosperity and development of TCSOL.
