Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine(hereinafter referred to as Canon)is one of the most famous medical classics in China, which was the earliest existing classics and has a huge influence in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.Since the 20 th century, many scholars have conducted researches and translation of Canon, which has provided rich reference materials for the exchange of Chinese and Western medical cultures. There are a lot of culture-loaded words in Canon, which embody our traditional Chinese medicine culture. But due to the rich cultural connotation of the culture-loaded words, they also make the translation of Canon very difficult.Among the existing translations, the translation by Li Zhaoguo is generally accepted in academia and is known as the representative work of the translation of Canon. After reviewing the literature,it is found that there are few studies on the translation of culture-loaded words in Li Zhaoguo's English translation. While through the comparing analysis of the corpus, the translation of culture-loaded words reflects the existence of Image Schema but few study on the translation of culture-loaded words is conducted from Image Schema. The object of this research is the English translation of Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine · Su Wen translated by Li Zhaoguo. This study uses methods of classification analysis and case study to analyze the types of Image Schema and translation strategies reflected in the translation of culture-loaded words. The research focuses on two questions: 1.What kind of Image Schema do the English translations of culture-loaded words in Cannon mainly reflect? 2.Which translation strategies did Li Zhaoguo use for the translation of culture-loaded words in Cannon? This study found that the culture-load words in the Cannon are mainly divided into culture-loaded words about philosophy, nature, disease terms and human tissues.Among them, the number of culture-load words is the largest, and they are the most difficult to understand in the communication of Chinese and Western medical culture.Image Schema theory establishes a common cognitive mechanism for different cultural connotations in Chinese and Western medicine culture, and can better explain most of the culture-loaded words in the Cannon. There is one common point on the cognition of the original text during the translation, that is,culture-load words related to human tissue, human body, nature and other things can be abstracted into one schema:Container Schema. On the basis of this cognition, the English translation of culture-loaded words in Cannon has the following rules: transliteration +(literal translation + transliteration)+ post-textannotation.This translation strategy retains the Chinese pronunciation of culture-loaded words and takes the use of the notes to explain the cultural significance and scientific connotation behind the transliteration at the same time. Therefore, the translation which can successfully retains the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine culture and translate the cultural meaning in the original text to the target language readers through a common cognitive mechanism can be able to make the target language reader understand the rich content of Chinese culture-loaded words more accurately. At the same time, this paper could provide reference for the study of the English translation of the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine, which can help foreign scholars in their study on traditional Chinese medicine classics and is helpful to the communication of the Chinese and western medicine culture.
