| The Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine is the earliest medical classic in China.It is also a comprehensive medical book which is referred to as the ancestor of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).Due to the ancient origin of the book,it has complex cultural connotations that have presented many barriers to understanding the extent of the information it contains and many scholars have commented on the book in different ways.The Chinese classic review of the Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine as edited by Qian Chaochen and commented by Yao Chunpeng is the leading work that attempts to bring forth a significant modern,contextual understanding of the ancient text.It accordingly plays an important guiding role for readers to understand the whole culture of Chinese medicine.The purpose of this translation report is to present selected aspects of the content of Qian and Yao’s work for English translation,in order to help English readers better understand the deep context of Chinese medicine culture within traditional Chinese culture and therefore promote the dissemination of TCM culture to the world.This report presents a comprehensive summary of a translation project of a selection of Yao’s comments.It includes an introduction,task description,process description and case analysis followed by a brief conclusion.Nida’s functional equivalence theory was used as the technical grounding of this translation of Yao’s comments on the Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine.Different strategies and techniques were used in dealing with the source text in different contexts so that accurate information is translated and conveyed on both linguistic and cultural levels.This translation project is an attempt to bring the translation and introductions of TCM to the English-speaking world.The aim of this work is to entice more scholars at home and abroad to pay greater attention to TCM,especially the Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine.At the same time,it is hoped that the present work will have implications for the translation of traditional Chinese medical texts. |
