Xiaokai(regular script in small characters)is the earliest form of expression of regular script. It has been an important part of the calligraphy history since Zhong Yao and Wang Xizhi. It is difficult for Xiaokai to make a breakthrough after the Tang Dynasty when the calligraphers perfected it and established the law. After the Yuan Dynasty, under the constraints of “preciseness” and social value,Xiaokai gradually went to the road of emphasizing techniques and seeking stability and served for the imperial examination and the transcription of Canon books, and finally became a “Taige style” with less changes. As a symbol of the late Ming Dynasty,Fu Shan's Xiaokai included the characteristics of reform and innovation. On the one hand,Fu Shan's Xiaokai is rooted in the styles of Zhong Yao and Wang Xizhi. On the other hand,it is compatible with the elements of Zhuanshu(seal script),Lishu(official script),Caoshu(cursive script)and Xingshu(running script),as well as the elements of art composition and method of the use of ink and water, and a large number of variant characters are used to increase the richness of the works.Fushan's Xiaokai works are full of vitality in the concept of significance is commonplace. They have the characteristics of integration of all kinds, which not only set the great achievements of Xiaokai in the late Ming Dynasty, but also are the outstanding representatives of Xiaokai reform after the Tang Dynasty.
