On The Application Of Basic Techniques In Conference Interpreting

Conference interpreting is well-known for its challenging requirement on thepracticing interpreter regarding the ken of knowledge. The interpreter should at least bewell equipped with solid foundation in bilingual knowledge, extensive extra linguisticknowledge, comprehensiveness of interpreting skills, sound psychological quality andfine ethics professional conduct.Among all the requirements of interpreters, unerring interpreting techniques take apredominant stance and play a unique role in the process of conference interpreting. Theinterpreting techniques are of great importance for the performance of the conferences.Concerning with the scientific and practical applicability of the interpreting skills in thepractice of conference interpreting, the thesis is designed to explore the application of theinterpreting skills in conference interpreting and dig out the reasons these technique areused.The thesis consists of an introduction, the main body and a conclusion. Its maincontents are as follows,The first part is introduction, which contains a brief review of the development ofconference interpreting, an introduction to the significance of this study on theapplication of basic techniques in conference interpreting and the methodology the thesisis based on, which is the research on previous theoretical works and the study on thepractice of conference interpreting in real-time situation.The second part is the main body, which is made up of three chapters.Chapter One is a brief introduction to the grounding theory of conferenceinterpreting, including a definition, classification of conference interpreting, process ofconference interpreting based on Gile’s theory. After that a contrastive study on uniquefeatures of Chinese and English language, which will turn out to be obstacles andchallenges in conference interpreting if interpreters fail to take them into account. Thispaper believes that these differences have made interpreting skills essential to the processof conference interpreting. Then, this paper will focus on the qualifications of theinterpreter and list the principles of conference interpreting as the guideline of theapplication of interpreting skills. Chapter Two focuses on an elaboration of several popular and effective techniquesapplied in conference interpreting from English into Chinese, after consulting a greatnumber of references and studying some record scripts of professional conferenceinterpreting. This thesis aims to figure out how these interpreting skills are applied inconference interpreting to deal with the differences between two languages on differentlinguistic level with typical examples.Chapter Three embarks on an elaboration of the main techniques applied inconference interpreting from Chinese into English, including combination, amplification,simplification, conversion in order to give a tentative systematic analysis to conferenceinterpreting theoretically and practically and attempts to help those who are interested inconference interpreting.Then will come into a conclusion of the thesis. It summarizes the findings of thethesis, discusses the limitations and offers some suggestions on future practices inconference interpreting.To sum up, the very word “conference” sets conference interpretation different fromany other kind of interpretation; therefore, principles of conference interpreting seem toemphasize more on efficiency, intelligence and formality. To be a competent interpreter,it is far from enough for one just to keep in mind all these principles and skills; what’smore, he or she should push himself or herself into diligent work following the properpath, as practice itself is a rich source of such principles.
