Report On The English-chinese Translation Of Literary Forms Of Argument In Early China

The report aims to study the translation of Chapter Two ‘Beyond Parallelism: A Rethinking of Patterns of Coordination and Subordination in Chinese Expository Prose' and Chapter Three ‘On the Range and Performance of Laozi-Style Tetrasyllables',both of which are elected from Literary Forms of Argument in Early China.Academic texts are based on many terms,formal styles and complex sentence structures,for which the translator pays more attention to the theoretical,systematic and logical features of the translation.The report is divided into four parts.The first part is the elaboration on translation task.The second part discusses the description of translation process which includes preparation before translation,expression in translation,and proofreading after translation.The third part is the collection of case analysis,mainly explores what translation methods and strategies should be adopted to translate academic texts with higher literariness.In order to make the translation smooth and close to the original text,the translator sets those representative sentences as examples and adopts such methods as literal translation of terms,paraphrase,transformation of expression,word formation,adjustment of sentence structure and so on.By describing the translation ideas,comparing and analyzing the thinking patterns of Chinese and English,the translator polishes and adjusts the whole translation many times just for its smoothness and fluency.The fourth part is a summary of this report,from which the readers can be inspired and make up for the insufficiency of the translation.The report can provide some effective reference for the translation of academic texts in this field,and bring some objective and applicable translation methods for such research.
