Verbalization Strategy In English-chinese Translation

Recent years have seen an array of published translation works on history and social science.2018 marks the 100 th anniversary of the end of the First World War,and the trickle of research and non-fiction works on the Great War has turned into a flood.Many of those non-fiction works are such an exercise in literary aesthetics that translators tend to find it challenging to render them into Chinese texts that appeal to panicky readers.This paper is a review of the translation of Lawrence in Arabia: War,Deceit,Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East.The analysis is based on the verbalization strategy,which includes the verbalization of different static word classes and that of static language structures.The strategy is based on the differences between Chinese,a dynamic language predominated by verbs,and English,a static one predominated by nouns.Those differences can be traced to the fundamental differences in ways of thinking between Chinese and Westerners.The strategy is employed to render long English sentences into short ones bearing the hallmarks of Chinese sentence structures and avoid translationese closely associated with Europeanization.The revised version of translation for all sentences listed in the paper is also provided.
