The Interpreter's Role In Sports Events

This report is mainly based on the author's interpreting practice in the orienteering technical meeting and the internal meeting between the technical officials and referees,anti-doping committee members of the 7^th CISM World Military Games held in Wuhan,China from 18 to 27 October 2019.The report contains four chapters,namely task description,process description,case study,and conclusion.At the beginning part,the report first gives a brief introduction to the project background,interpreting tasks,and major participants.What follows is a review of the pre-task preparation,interpreting performance,and post-task reflection.The technical meeting was held at the Dahuashan Outdoor Sports Center.During the meeting,the interpreter provided consecutive interpreting services for significant speakers,including the orienteering representatives from CISM and members of the Orienteering and Triathlon Organizing Committee.In the case analysis,it first goes over the theory of the interpreter's role as the theoretical guidance.Based on the audio-transcription,the author analyzes the challenges he met,the measures he took,and concludes the role he assumed during the interpreting experience.Through the case analysis,it is found that the interpreter played three roles:text organizer,gate keeper,and communication coordinator.He acted as a text organizer by logic adjustment and information extraction when meeting intensive information.The role of a gatekeeper found expression in his selection of relevant information from a large amount of information.To promote effective communication,he acted as the communication coordinator when it did not run well,and there were cultural gaps or shocks.Therefore,in real sports interpreting,interpreters played a far more active role instead of a mere conduit.In the fourth part,the author summarizes the interpreter's roles during the task and limitations,hopefully shedding some light on interpreting learning and practicing.
