Report On Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting Based On User Expectations

This report is based on a consecutive interpreting task conducted by the author during the 2019 Seminar on Human Resources for Developing Countries sponsored by The Ministry of Commerce and organized by Fujian Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Officials'Training Center from 6^th to 26^th September 2019.Seventeen lectures related to human resources had been held during the seminar.The author provided consecutive interpreting service for six lectures on three themes,each of which was scheduled for three hours.According to previous studies,interpreters should meet the criteria of completeness of information,fluency of expression,logic,correctness of technical terms,accurate grammar and pleasant voice,etc.Users,too,expect the interpreting service provided to them to meet those criteria.In cultural and educational as well as free and impromptu speech scenarios,fluency of expression,logicality and technical terms are most valued by users.As an emerging form of interpreting,interpreting at foreign aid lectures not only share the characteristics of cultural and educational as well as free and impromptu speech,it is also characterized by political sensitivity,difference in cultural background and interactivity.Considering the above factors,the author summed up the principles which she should follow as appropriateness,interactivity,clarity and logicality.In this report,the author gives a detailed account of this interpreting task-after an introduction to the client,lecturers and the interpreter herself,the author gives a specific description of the interpreting process,including the pre-task preparation,on-site interpreting process,difficulties encountered and the feedback.Based on the transcript of this interpreting,the author carried out cases analysis based on those difficulties encountered and principles followed from the perspective of user expectations-appropriateness,interactivity,clarity and logicality.With the analysis of this interpreting task,on the one hand,the author wants to improve her own interpreting competence.On the other hand,the author also wants to share her view on the role of user expectations in consecutive interpreting with other interpreters.All interpreters should follow corresponding principles to cope with difficulties they meet in foreign aid lectures so as to improve the quality and efficiency of their interpreting service.
