| Web novels featuring martial cultivation not only inherit traditional ideologies from Taoism,Buddhism and Confucianism from Chinese traditional martial arts novels,but also integrate fantastic elements in online games.It enriches core concepts in martial arts novels,including traditional martial arts,cultivation and moral principles of heroes.With increasing overseas popularity of Chinese online literature(including web novels featuring martial cultivation),the demand of translation of such an area is rising.But different translation strategies tend to evoke different degree of popularity among readers.Therefore,it becomes increasingly important to study how to maintain the original flavor of web novels featuring martial cultivation in different cultural contexts.Super Urban Master in the project is a typical web novel featuring martial cultivation.It not only accommodates traditional ideologies of Taoism,Buddhism and Confucianism,but also inherits and innovates martial arts and other concepts in martial arts novels and cultivation novels.A lot of these concepts are derived from the same root as those in similar types of literature.Therefore,on the basis of former studies towards foreignization and domestication and the comparison between the translation of proper names in Super Urban Master,including appellations,basic concepts and names for martial arts and postures,and corpora of Wuxiaworld and Wikipedia,the report presents how the overall strategy of reconciling foreignization and domestication was designed by analyzing the self-bulit one hundred and one terms for proper names in specific textual context.Hope the report could help standardize the translation services(including the building of term banks and corpora)in this area and contribute to the overseas spread of Chinese web novels. |
