The further deepening of global financial integration has demonstrated the importance of Chinese translation of English financial texts as invaluable reference for understanding the latest developments of the global financial condition. The English-Chinese translation of such text is highly challenging due to the use of abundant financial terms, abstract expressions as well as long and complicated sentences. But it is also rewarding to discuss the translation techniques adopted in translating English financial texts. This is a project report on the English-Chinese translation of the Global Financial Stability Report(April 2018).Based on part of the translated text which covers financial stability outlook, monetary policy normalization, returns in risky assets, and financial vulnerabilities in China, approximately 13,000 words, this report aims to explore the features of the source text, the difficulties encountered in the translation, and techniques used to ensure accurate and appropriate target text. The report is divided into five parts.Chapter One describes the translation task and clarifies its background and significance.Chapter Two justifies the adoption and application of Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence in the translation process, and lists the other pre-translation preparations including the use of parallel texts and auxiliary tools,as well as the compilation of bilingual glossary.Chapter Three illustrates the features of the source text, particularly on lexical and syntactic levels.Frequently used financial terms, polysemous words, normalization of verbs,as well as long and passive sentences with much information and complicated structures, all constitute the difficulties in the translation.Chapter Four exemplifies in detail how functional equivalence can be achieved through the employment of translation techniques on lexical and syntactic levels, including literal translation, conversion, addition, omission, paraphrasing, restructuring and division. The last chapter reflectively summarises the translation practice and this report in the hope of providing suggestions to translators engaged in financial English-Chinese translation.
