Vocabulary is the foundation of language,which is the prerequisite for improving listening,speaking,reading and writing skills.Therefore,vocabulary teaching plays a crucial role in English teaching.The new curriculum standard has made the clear provisions for English vocabulary.Students should learn 1500-1600 words and 200-300 idioms or fixed collocations.They master not only the basic content of vocabulary,but also the usage of them.In practice,the traditional vocabulary teaching method is still popular with many rural junior high school teachers due to its quick short-term effect.However,the traditional vocabulary teaching method is not conducive to enhancing students' vocabulary leaning,and the long-term effect on students' vocabulary learning is not obvious.Even it results in students' boredom and fear with English vocabulary learning.It does not conform to the cognitive of students and the requirements of the new curriculum standard.Based on the current situation of English vocabulary teaching in rural junior high school,the researcher integrates mind mapping into vocabulary teaching and tries to solve the following two problems:(1)What are the effects of mind mapping approach on improving students' English vocabulary proficiency in rural junior high school?(2)What are the changes of students' attitudes towards English vocabulary learning after application of mind mapping approach?In this study,students from two classes are selected for the experiments.There is no significant difference in vocabulary learning ability between the two classes,and the teaching content and teaching schedule are consistent.Class One(EC)adopts mind mapping approach,while Class Five(CC)is taught by traditional vocabulary teaching method.Instruments such as questionnaire,tests and interview are adopted to investigate the English vocabulary teaching.SPSS 23.0 is used to analyze the results in this thesis.Through analyzing the result,it indicates that mind mapping approach is feasible and effective in vocabulary teaching in rural junior high school.Students' English vocabulary proficiency can be improved and their learning interest can be stimulated.Mind mapping can also cultivate students' divergent thinking and innovative thinking effectively.
