This report is based on the author's translation of Chapter 1 and 2.0 & 2.1 of Chapter 2 of the academic work,Phonology: Theory and Description, written by Andrew Spenser. The book is a monograph on phonological theory and description, which receives high praise from many linguistic scholars for being an indispensable resource for teachers and students studying phonology. However, there is no Chinese version of this book available since its first publication in 1996.So the author chooses this book for the translation task and writes the current translation report. The report focuses on the analysis of the translation of complex sentences with adverbial clause(s)(henceforth CSAC for short)in the task. The translation report is composed of five chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction about the translation task, the source text and the book's author, requirements for the task and structure of the report.Chapter 2 covers designing a translation plan and collecting relevant references.Chapter 3 “translation process” mainly discusses characteristics of the book, major difficulties in translation and proofreading.Chapter 4 studies cases, focusing on the analysis of the translation of CSAC,which appears frequently in the academic text featuring strong logic and sophisticated sentence structure, signified by complex sentences with two or more clauses.Chapter 5 is a summary of the author's reflections and outlook on this translation task.In the process of writing this report, the author summarizes that when translating CSAC in English academic texts, one should firstly analyze sentence structure and identify the main clause, and then clarify the relations not only between subordinate clauses and the main clause but also within clauses. In this way the translator will be able to produce an accurate and logical target text that is in line with Chinese expressions by applying various translation skills, based on the grammatical and logical relationships within the sentence together with sentence meaning and the contrastive analysis of English and Chinese. It is hoped that the report can provide some reference for academic text translation,in particular, the translation of CSAC in this type of text.
