This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text of the translation report is China and the Manchus, written by a famous British sinologist Herbert Allen Giles. The translator selects Chapters One to Four as the translation project.Among them,Chapter One “The Nu-Chens and Kitans” is dedicated to the origin and rise of the Manchus,Chapter Two “The Fall of the Mings” is committed to the several important historical figures and their influences on the fall of the Ming Dynasty, and the chapter three “Shun Chin” as well as the chapter four “Kang Hsi” mainly tells the two emperors' ways of running the state. In this report, the translator first makes a brief introduction to the overview and significance of the project as well as the structure of the report. Then an introduction to the ST author and an in-depth analysis of the contents and features of the selected text are made as well.Besides, the translator briefly describes the process of translating. In the translating process, some problems and difficulties have been encountered, which are mainly embodied in three levels including lexis, syntax and discourse. The difficulties at lexical level mainly include the names of people and things in northern minority areas, parts of speech and culture-loaded words;the difficulties at syntactic level mainly lie in the long and complex sentences as well as the logical relationship between sentences;while the difficulties at discourse level principally cover more person deixis and ellipses in the original English text. For these translation difficulties above, the translator adopts different translation methods to tackle them respectively. At lexical level, the translator first consults a large number of related materials to determine the translation of these proper and typical words, then annotation is adopted to make a supplement and explanation,in addition, conversion and domestication are respectively used to tackle the translation of parts of speech and culture-loaded words. At syntactic level, the translator adopts linear translation, inversion, division and the change of the voices separately. At discourse level, ellipsis and amplification are mainly used.In the process of translating, the translator strives to make a faithful and fluent translation. In addition, the translator further realizes that a qualified translator not only has to master certain translation methods and skills, but also possess a solid bilingual foundation and adequate translation practice. At last, the translator hopesthat the translation can provide some references for the TL readers and other translators concerned.
