Medical English,as a branch of English for Science and Technology,is attached to ESP(English for specific purposes).Veterinarian is a branch of medical science,and it can be split into three categories on the basis of different divisions of work.These branches includes: practicing veterinary,governmental veterinary,and veterinary researchers.With the rise of China’s globalization,more and more experts come to work in China and their demand on high quality veterinary service has called the emergence of many bilingual pet clinics.Due to the fact that China is left behind on veterinary research and clinical instruction comparing with western countries,many veterinary institutions start hiring western veterinary trainer to give lecture for veterinarians who are working for these clinics.Basing on this background,it meets the trend of market demand to do research on veterinary conference interpreting and it is beneficial for enriching the knowledge in relative academic field.Interpretive Theory has attracted many attentions in recent years and is abundant in academic publications.Interpretive Theory is also widely adopted in interpreting teaching instructions.The triangular model is instructed by Interpretive Theory.By this model,the interpreter is not interpreting the language itself in the process of interpreting.The model stresses that the interpreter is interpreting the sense behind the language.And the discovery and re-creation of the connotation of the sense depend on cognitive supplement.The thesis studies an example of ultrasound training conference in Shanghai given by a lecturer from HKVUS(Hongkong Mobile Ultrasound Service)from the perspective of Interpretive Theory.The voice recording was taken and transmitted to text and proofread by the lecturer and interpreter,hence its originality can be guaranteed.The thesis analyzes three phases and some basic view points regarding the triangular model,and studies the feasibility of adopting Interpretive Theory in veterinary conference interpreting from the following two aspects: linguistic features(lexical,syntactical,and discourse)and cognitive supplement(cognitive knowledge and situational context).By studying these two aspects,the thesis concludes that the interpreter needs to obtain relative professional knowledge and awareness of situational context apart from the understanding of linguistic knowledge.By analyzing each item listed above,the thesis exhibits the features of veterinary English,discusses the possibility of adopting Interpretive Theory in veterinary conference interpreting,and suggests strategy to optimize the quality of interpreting through generalizing result of study from each item.The thesis aims to promote the utilization of Interpretive Theory in this field,and hopefully to give suggestions for fellows who want to work on veterinary conference interpreting. |
