A Practice Report Of E-C Interpreting On Class Of Design Concepts In Engineering

This thesis is a report on the author's interpreting practice for Gregory Alan Crebbin,a foreign teacher from Australia,during the professional practice in the International Education College of Shenyang Institute of Engineering.The form of this interpreting practice is English-Chinese consecutive interpreting,which lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes.The content of the class is the fourth step of the concept of engineering design—evaluating solutions.In the process of interpreting,improper pause is the author's main problem in the target language output.Based on Daniel Gile's Effort Model,this report mainly analyzes the improper pauses in this interpreting practice.According to the Effort Model,consecutive interpreting is performed in two phases,the comprehension phase(or listening and note-taking phase),and the speech production phase(or reformulation phase).In this practice report,the author firstly divides the improper pauses into silent pauses,filled pauses and utterance interruptions in line with her interpreting practice.Secondly,the author analyzes the reasons for the improper pauses are listening and comprehension obstacles,note-reading difficulty and self-repairs in three aspects of pre-interpreting reparation,information processing and the target language output.Lastly,the author provides strategies to reduce improper pauses under the guidance of Gile's Effort Model.The strategies include improving listening and analysis ability,improving note-taking skills and self-monitoring.The author takes the purpose of communication as the starting point based on the understanding and acceptance of the target audience,strives to avoid improper pauses and improve the quality of interpreting.With these strategies applied,the interpreting will be more of fluency,clarity and accuracy.In the last part,the author concludes that the main findings,limitations of the report and suggestions for future interpreting study.The author really hopes that this practice report will provide references for solving the problem of improper pause in consecutive interpreting in the future.
