English writing,as an important productive language skill,plays an important role in the evaluation system of National Entrance Examination.The new version of English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High School in 2019 also puts forward higher requirements for students' English writing ability.However,studies show that there are some problems in the present situation of English writing teaching in senior high schools in China.Students often have difficulties in vocabulary,syntax and discourse in their writing.In recent years,the continuous enrichment and development of lexical chunk theory provides a new idea for us to improve our teaching methods.Lexical chunks,either fixed or semi-fixed language structures,which combine grammar,semantics and context,have the characteristics of both vocabulary and sentence and play a very important role in language production.Therefore,this thesis will study the effectiveness of lexical chunk approach in the teaching practice of English writing.The study mainly focuses on the following two research questions.1.What are the effects of lexical chunk approach on improving senior high school students' English writing proficiency?2.What are the changes of senior high school students' attitude towards English writing after the application of lexical chunk approach?The study adopts the combination of both qualitative research methods and quantitative research methods,selecting 94 students in two classes of the first grade of a key senior high school in Shenyang as the research subjects.A series of teaching experiment was carried out in the EC,involving lexical chunks input,lexical chunks memory and discourse output which lasted for a semester.Data was collected and analyzed through writing tests,questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with some students.The research findings show that through lexical chunk approach,students have a strong awareness of lexical chunks and the ability of lexical chunks recognition.The proficiency of students English writing has been improved.And their writing confidence and writing interest are greatly promoted.This study has made a positive exploration on the integration of lexical chunk approach and English writing teaching.In the teaching process,teachers should take lexical chunks as the basic unit of language input and provide students with the opportunity to apply lexical chunks and also put chunk teaching into the whole English teaching activity.
