This is a translation report on the publicity materials of X Academy of Chinese Traditional Culture. The translator is responsible for the whole translation project.Since the translation project is mainly about feedbacks, reflections and comments of the students, parents and teachers in the Academy, the writing style is relatively plain and simple, but the idiomatic expressions that it covers are the key and difficult points. Therefore, with the help of the functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida,a famous American translation theorist, the translator explores the translation of culture-loaded idioms in this project. Here, the idiomatic expressions include not only the common idioms, but also a range of idioms like four-word phrases, anecdotes, classic stories, antithetical phrases and so on.Based on the translator's previous practical experience in translation and a great number of research literature on idiomatic expressions, the translator classifies the idiomatic expressions in the source text into the following: namely,four-character phrases, classic poetries, common sayings and rhyming couplets. Then, under the framework of functional equivalence, the translator makes a tentative research on the translation of the selected cultural-loaded idiomatic expressions.During this process, the translator proposes five translation methods for idioms including literal translation, free translation, literal translation with explanation or notes, combination of literal translation and free translation and borrowing translation, and discusses their translation effects. Finally, the gains and enlightenments learned from the translation of idioms with Chinese flavor are summed up.
