| The thesis studied selection of translation strategies on C-E translation of unique Chineseeconomic expressions. Expressions are the relatively active component of a language, which areconstantly changing with the development of society and economy. Since the implementation ofthe reform and opening-up policy, China has undergone dramatic changes in many aspects suchas politics, economy and culture and so on. All these changes have, to a great extent, beenreflected in our daily language. And the most direct and representative indication is expressions, especially unique Chinese economic expressions. These expressions reflect development andadvancement of China’s economy. However, it is difficult to find equivalents in the Englishlanguage for such expressions perfectly. So it is our responsibilities to translate theseexpressions into English appropriately so that English readers can objectively know theeconomic development of China. The basic requirement for the C-E translation of unique Chinese economic expressionswas the attainment of the maximal equivalence between the comprehension and appreciation ofChinese readers and that of English readers. Hereby, the thesis applied functional equivalencetheory as theoretical basis. And with the guidance of functional equivalence theory, a criterionfor the C-E translation of unique Chinese economic expressions was drawn. And a further studywas conducted to analyze the feasibility of domestication and foreignization with specificexamples. The two strategies were complementary in essence, and they also had their respectiveadvantages and disadvantages. On the basis of different translation situations and differentpurposes, different strategies should be employed. And the main orientation of foreignizationcould be obtained in the C-E translation of unique Chinese economic expressions throughdiscussion. This thesis is composed of five chapters. the first chapter gives a general introduction ofthe thesis, including research background, significance of research, research questions andlayout of the thesis; Chapter Two presents a brief introduction of unique Chinese economicexpressions, including its definition, features and causes and so on; while in Chapter Three, thethesis reviews theoretical basis of the thesis: functional equivalence theory and further discussesabout the interrelationship between functional equivalence theory and unique Chinese economicexpressions, then gives a criterion for C-E translation of unique Chinese economic expressions;the Chapter Four goes a step further on the analysis of the feasibility of domestication andforeignization and lists different techniques to embody the usage of domestication andforeignization with many examples in C-E translation of unique Chinese economic expressions;the last chapter is conclusion, which shows the main orientation of foreignization in C-Etranslation of unique Chinese economic expressions and points out the main contribution andlimitation of the research. |
