This is the report of the translation project of Forensic Psychology — A Very Short Introduction,and the writer is the translator of the whole book.Throughout the translation,the reoccurring attributive structure has brought out many difficulties.This report,under the guidance of semantic field theory,integrates componential analysis and translation methods together.Based on the actual experience of translation,the writer points out three features of the attributive structure,namely the position of the attribute,the amount of the attribute,and whether the head is an event noun.Subsequently,the writer classifies all attributive structures of the book into 3general kinds with 11 detailed types.Therefore,this report proposes 5 translation methods of English attributive,including correspondence,division,combination,supplementation,and transformation.Correspondence is mostly applied to simple attributive structures with one or two modifiers.But with regard to complicated structures with three or more modifiers,the division is usually used to clarify the expressive logic of the source attributive structure,and the logical relationship between headwords within a certain sentence,or different modifiers of one attributive structure.If many attributes have same sememes,they can be combined into one Chinese expression.Moreover,given the head is acted by event nouns,the attributive structure is suggested to be converted into other structures like subject-predicate structure,and the agent and patient of the action should be supplemented according to the actual context.In addition,this report holds the view that the translator is required to preserve the core status of the head in original attributive structures,which,when transformed into other structures,should also be highlighted both syntactically and semantically.This principle is able to ensure the fidelity of the translated text to the source text,as well as the full conveyance of original information,and meanwhile,the translated text can satisfy the cognitive pattern of target readers with better expressiveness and understandably. |
