A Report On The Translation Of Forensic Oratory(Part One)

This is a translation report on the book Forensic Oratory(Part One).It is designed to help law students and young lawyers prepare themselves to perform their duties as lawyers.This translation report mainly discusses the difficulties encountered in the translation of attributive clauses in part one of the book and their translation techniques.Attributive clause,a linguistic phenomenon,appears frequently in the original text of the book,which makes it more difficult for the author of the report to translate.Therefore,it is very important to correctly handle the translation of attributive clauses.During the period of translating the source text Forensic Oratory,the author of this translation report encountered plentiful and abundant attributive clauses which are difficult to understand and translate.At the same time,the parataxis is more popular in Chinese and the hypotaxis is much accounted in English,and the attributive clauses in English have no corresponding syntactic form in Chinese,and the structure of the attributive clauses is complex,which all bring great difficulties to the effective translation of English attributive clause.What’s more,long sentences are common,which also makes it difficult to translate attributive clauses into Chinese.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the author of this translation report adopts three translation techniques for the translation of attributive clauses:fronting,division and integration.The author of the report hopes to provide some references for those engaged in the translation and the students majoring in law or translation about the translation of attributive clauses in legal works from English to Chinese.
