Cohesion And Coherence In Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting plays an important role in foreign affairs.In the process of consecutive interpreting,the interpreter needs to listen to and identify the source language and utilize her background knowledge and notes before delivering her output correctly and quickly with a thorough understanding.This is what the interpreter should do.And as for her output,the delivery shall be coherent and smooth because it is closely related to the quality of interpreting.Hence,studies on cohesion and coherence have become high profile in translation field.A lot of scholars have conducted studies on translation quality based on cohesion theory,yet those studies mainly focus on translation instead of interpreting.But the author of the thesis thinks that cohesion and coherence are both what translation and interpreting should give priority to.The author finds that studies on the application to and analyses of cohesion and coherence are scanty.Moreover,most of existing studies of interpreting are based on such theories as the relevance theory,the interpretive theory and the functional equivalence theory.However,few scholars attempted to apply a corpus-based approach to interpreting.The thesis predominantly adopts a corpus tool to conduct quantitative analysis on self-built corpus from a cohesion and coherence perspective,and uses bilingual corpus as cases to support the argument.Cohesive devices include reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.The author of the thesis holds that the application of reference and conjunction is an integral part in realizing cohesion with high frequency of usage.Besides,there is a great difference between Chinese and English.Chinese lays emphasis on parataxis while English focuses on hypotaxis.So naturally,cohesive devices are different.On this basis,the author of the thesis believes that it is of great significance to employ reference and conjunction in achieving the shift of cohesive devices and realizing logical explicitness and coherence.The self-built corpus includes the interpreting corpus of the press conference for China-US Meeting in G20 Summit on 1st December 2018,the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting/Post Ministerial Conference and Related Meetings 30 July-4 August 2018 Singapore,the press conference for the High-level Dialogue of China-Africa Leaders and Business Representatives in 31st August 2018,Ministerial Meeting of the UN Security Council on denuclearization of North Korean Peninsular on 15 December 2017 and the press conference for the first session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee on China's diplomatic policies and diplomacy on 3rd April 2017.On the basis of cohesion theory in English,the author extracts word frequency of referential words and conjunctives,then illustrates how to achieve text cohesion and coherence through the shift of cohesive devices and the reshuffle of logical relations by analyzing specific cases.The research shows that the usage frequency of referential words and conjunctives is quite high and suggests that the frequent application of cohesive devices in Chinese-English interpreting successfully contributes to the cohesion and coherence of the interpreting output.
