A Translation Report On Laos' Law On Investment Promotion (Amendment In 2016)

Since Belt and Road Initiative was put forward,the relations between China and Laos have reached the best in history,due to the close contact on trading,traveling and so on.And a large number of Chinese companies conduct investment and trading activities in Laos,which inevitably leads to many foreign-related legal issues between the two countries.Moreover,the demand for relevant legal services in Laos is becoming increasingly urgent.However,the Chinese translations of the current laws in Laos are very scarce.Therefore,this translation report takes on the task of translating Laos' Law on Investment Promotion(Amendment in 2016)into Chinese,and then analyzes its features,translation difficulties and methods.This translation report could be divided into four chapters.The first chapter is about introduction,which mainly gives a brief introduction to the source text(ST)and the background,purpose and significance of the translation task.The second chapter is about the description of translation process,including pre-task preparation,translation and post-translation revision.The third chapter offers the case study.In this chapter,the translator analyzes difficulties and strategies of translation with examples from three levels: the lexical level(law terms and semantic gap),the syntactic level(sentence structure and long sentences),the textual level(modal verbs and passive voice).At the lexical level,this project uses the English-Chinese two-way parallel legal corpus,as well as authoritative media such as the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the English version of China Daily to discuss the terminology of multi-translation and the solution of untranslated terms in legal text translation.At the syntactic level,the sentence structure and the translation of long sentences are discussed.By comparing and analyzing the differences between English and Chinese expressions,the sentence structure is clarified.When translating long sentences,the translator firstly cuts the sentences into small parts and then adjusts the word order to form a number of Chinese short sentences.At the textual level,modal verbs and passive voice are introduced in detail,and passive voice is transformed by analyzing specific examples.Finally,in the summary of the third chapter,the translator summarizes the translation difficulties during the translation process and the corresponding translation strategies and methods.The fourth chapter summarizes the translation practice and outlines the translator's gains and the shortcomings in this translation report.
