A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Laos' Law On Contract And Tort

As the strategic support of implementing the Belt and Road Initiative and important neighboring country,Laos is actively keeping close communication and cooperation with China,and in turn,China also promotes the trades between enterprises of both countries,thereupon the frequent economic trades and interest disputes contribute to the increasing need of legal services.Law on Contract and Tort of Laos provides a must for those who engage in the Chinese-Laos trades or plan to do so.The author chooses Law on Contract and Tort of Laos as her translation task,and completes the pre-translation,translation and proofreading work under the guidance of the tutor,hoping to help the translation of relevant Laos' legal documents in the future.Law on Contract and Tort of Laos belongs to the representative legal text filled with a great number of legal terms and long complex sentences,its language being characteristics of seriousness and accuracy and its contents being objective and real,therefore the faithfulness to the contents and style of the ST should also be found in the TT of the translator.The author makes use of appropriate translation techniques to solve such translation difficulties as common words with special meanings in legal text,the translation of two synonyms connected by coordinating conjunction and the conversion of word class at the lexical level,the translation of passive sentences,the translation of long complex sentences,negation of sentence at the syntactic level,and the application of reference,conjunction and substitution in textual translation,and then demonstrates them by the concrete examples.The translation skills to solve these difficulties can be concluded as follows: About the translation of passive sentences,there are four methods including converting the passive voice into the passive forms of Chinese,and translating them into sentences withoutsubjects,converting the objects of English into the subject of Chinese and translating them into the active clauses.As for the long and complex sentences,the author employs syntactic linearity,reversing and division to deal with.In addition to that,the following translation principles of legal text are always obeyed by the author in the process of translation:accuracy and rigorousness,clarity and concision,consistency,and professionalism.
