Abstract/Summary:
This report draws on a true translation project of the first four parts in the first chapter of History of Social Life in Modern China,a book of historical literature introducing traditional social life in modern China with strong cultural information. This report is concerned mainly with the difficulties of translating classical Chinese and the corresponding solutions to the difficulties.According to the characteristics of the implicit coherence in classical Chinese, there are three main difficulties in translating classical Chinese into English:(1)difficulty in translating asyndetic sentences;(2)difficulty in translating sentences lacking of subjects;(3)difficulty in translating sentences lacking of explicit meaning.According to the Cohesion and Coherence Theory, the translator has adopted appropriate translation methods to overcome the challenges met during the translation projects:(1)For the first difficulty, adding conjunctions and using prepositional phrases to enhance the logic between the sentences is feasible;(2)For the second,it can be handled by adding the subjects and using passive sentences;(3)As for the third,to convey the information accurately, manifesting the implied meaning according to the context can be adopted. The translation project proves that the deep understanding of the cohesion and coherence will greatly facilitate the choice of translation methods and help to achieve the coherence between the source text and the translation.
