| Cipai is an indispensable part of Ci and the treasure of Chinese culture.Metaphors are pervasive in Cipai, which makes it difficult to translate them. However, they don’t receive much attention in previous studies. Thus, the study chooses 113 Cipai of Song-ci as research object and analyzes six translation versions of six Cipai to find out the advantages and deficiency of previous translation methods.Guided by Newmark’s metaphor translation theory, the study searches for translation strategies for translating metaphors in Cipai by case study. The study mainly answers the following three questions:(1)What are cultural origins of metaphors in Cipai?(2)How these cultural origins influence the translation of metaphors in Cipai?(3)What strategies can be applied to translate metaphors in Cipai? The study finds:(1)Metaphors in Cipai are mainly derived from myths, legends, historical stories, values and traditional customs.(2)The cultural overlaps and diversities determine whether an image should be retained, transferred or eliminated, thus they play a decisive role in seeking strategies for translating metaphors in Cipai.(3)There are mainly four translation strategies can be applied, including reproducing the same image in TL,retaining the original metaphor with annotation, transferring metaphor to simile with annotation, transferring metaphor to non-metaphor.The study on the translation of metaphors in Cipai promotes the in-depth study of Cipai. Moreover, the strategies of metaphor translation in Cipai proposed in this study have tremendous practical meaning, which provides some references for the future study of translation of Cipai. |
