A Report On The Translation Of Rescue(Excerpts)

The translation report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the first three chapters of Rescue,a novel written by the American author Anita Shreve.The translation material centers on the life of an emergency medical technician living in a small town of Vermont,America.His profession makes it possible for him to save people from danger.However,he can do nothing for his problematic wife and daughter.The translation material depicts many rescuing scenes and the dialogues between the emergency medical technicians,so succinct and terse expressions are frequently used,which actually brings difficulties and challenges to translation.Under the guidance of explicitation strategy,the translation report analyzes the strategies and techniques adopted by the translator in tackling the difficulties in translating the excerpts of Rescue.As the core of the translation report,case studies demonstrate how the translator attempts to increase the logicality and intelligibility of the translated text and highlight characters' personalities under the guidance of explicitation strategy.The translator employs translation techniques including addition,annotation and specification to simplify the translated version so that the readers can easily understand the meaning.Cohesion and division are used to achieve the intra-textual coherence and clarify the logic between lines.And modal particles and modal adverbs are adopted to make clear characters' inner thoughts,emotions and personalities.The translation report is composed of four chapters.Chapter one introduces the translation task.Chapter two is the process description.Chapter three details the case studies under the guidance of explicitation strategy.Chapter four,the conclusion part,points out that under the guidance of explicitation,the translator can make creative use of translation techniques to make the translation faithful to the context and the meaning expressed clearly.
