Popular literature belongs to genre literature, and martial arts fiction is the most representative of Chinese discourse among all the genre literature. It is well known that martial arts novels of Jin Yong have exerted extensive influence all over the world. His works, which are featured with rich cultural connotation, imagination and national justice, not only endow contemporary Chinese literature with new language charm and cultural confidence, but also become one of the representative symbols of China's national image and national culture.Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born,Jin Yong's masterpiece, was translated into English by Anna Holmwood,a British Swedish translator, and published in February 2018.Once its English translation was put on the shelves,it aroused widespread interest from readers at home and abroad, and got positive feed-back.Nevertheless,as it's not very long since its birth, there are very few studies on the translation version in academic circles.Since the 1990 s,translation studies have been incorporated into the context of cross-cultural comparative studies by international translation theorists. And under this kind of macro environment and background, the principles of equality, respect, dialogue, and dynamic balance advocated by Interness theory resonate with the nature of cross-cultural communicative translation;hence the translation studies of popular literature from the view of Interness theory will be more comprehensive and abreast of the times. Therefore,a study on the translation from the perspective of Interness theory would not only expand the scope of the application of Interness theory, but also conduct an analysis of the English version in a more comprehensive manner, thus providing guidance and inspiration for the future translation study and practice of popular literature.Based on the previous studies on Interness translation theory conducted by domestic and foreign scholars, the study probes into the interness phenomena manifested in the translated version from aspects of intersubjectivity, intertextuality, and interculturality by analyzing typical examples selected from Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born and its English translation.Through theoretical study and analysis of translation examples, the major findings are as follows: 1)there are four major subjects, the original author, the translator, the target readers, and the sponsor respectively, which exert influence on the translation. In addition, the translator is the central subject who activelycommunicates and negotiates with other relevant subjects so as to achieve a balance between them.2)There are lots of intertextual phenomena showcased in the form of quotations of Chinese sayings, idioms, ancient prose and poems in the original work and these intertextual creations contribute to the attractive language style of the source language. When dealing with these elements, the translator creates intertextual phenomena with the same or similar effects in the target language by actively using her English intertextual ability, thus retaining the original language features as much as possible.3)There are a large number of Chinese cultural elements in Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born, which roughly fall into five categories: ecology, religion, material, society, and language. After taking into account the acceptance of the target readers and the market positioning of the English translation, the translator mainly chooses domestication strategy, for instance, skills like free translation, amplification, annotation, substitution, adaptation;in the meanwhile,in line with the original intention of spreading Chinese culture, foreignization strategies are also adopted by the translator, such as transliteration, literal translation, transliteration plus interpretation, aiming at presenting the target readers the unique Chinese cultural factors. The adoption and the effects of those translation skills adequately reflect the interness thinking of the translation version. To sum up,the thesis explores intercultural translation of popular literature from the perspective of Interness theory, taking the translation of Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born as corpus. In light of the comprehensive analysis of typical examples from intersubjectivity, intertextuality, and interculturality, conclusion can be drawn that the translation is an outcome after dialogue and negotiation on equality and mutual respect of involving interness factors, namely the participating subjects, the source texts and the target texts, the source language culture and the target language culture. On this account, the translation is well received at home and abroad and can be regarded as a successful example of intercultural translation of Chinese popular literature. Therefore, this study not only broadens the width of the application of Interness theory in popular literature translation, but also provides a reference for future translation practice of Chinese popular literature, thus being conducive to facilitating the pace of the "going global" of Chinese culture.
