A Translation Report Of Juvenile Detective Novel In Perspective Of Readers' Response Theory-A Case Study Of Nancy Drew

With the advent of electronic era,the reading time of juvenile,who are the main force of our national readership,has been seriously squeezed.One of the main reasons is the lack of reading materials which have strong attraction to teenagers in the domestic book market.Therefore,it would be advisable to import excellent works from overseas.Nancy Drew Mystery Stories has been popular in Europe and America for more than 80 years.High-quality translation of this series of detective novels will hopefully add beneficial and interesting reading materials to the domestic young readers.Detective stories are popular with readers for their unexpected scenarios,vivid descriptions and humorous dialogues.Nancy Drew Mystery Stories,apart from the above-mentioned features,are also characterised of colloquialism and having young girls as the main characters.The whispering statue and The Haunted Bridge,which I translated,are the fourteenth and fifteenth volumes of the series.This report is based on the author's experience of translating the two volumes as instructed by Readers' Response Theory.The theory was used to help solve the issue: how to translate the mood from English to Chinese faithfully and expressively while giving due consideration to the readership.With the problem solved,the translation is hoped to achieve better quality and higher level.Of the few available studies about mood translation,most have a focus on its C-E translation strategies;only a couple of them have touched upon the mood E-C translation,with no detailed analysis.This report tries to fill in the gap by analyzing and summarizing the E-C translation strategies of mood,for the purpose of better reader response.This report is divided into five parts.The first part introduces the background,gives an overall description of the translation task.The second part describes the translation process: pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The third part is a brief introduction of readers' responsetheory and its applicability to the translation of detective novels,Nancy Drew Series in particular.In the fourth part,the author presents a few specific cases and analysis which demonstrate how to use appropriate translation strategies(as guided by the theory)to solve the mood translation difficulties.The fifth part is a summary of the task and the writing process of the report.Implications,limitations and directions for further research follow.
