A Practice Report Of Interview Interpreting From The Perspective Of The 5W Theory Of Communication Based On The Program "Views On The Chinese Army By International Officers"

From September 2017 to January 2018,the present reporter conducted an internship in the International College of Defense Studies(ICDS)of the National Defense University of the PLA.During the internship,he was assigned to assist the correspondents from CCTV military channel to interview the international officers studying at ICDS,interpreting from Chinese to English and vice versa.The interview clips were later produced as a p rogram series entitled “Views on the Chinese Army by International Officers” which was continuously broadcasted in Military News on CCTV-7 from January 7th to January 11 th,2019.The present reporter analyzes the application of the 5W theory of communication studies in interview interpreting practice based on the interpreting records which were collected and transcribed as the corpus for this report.The interview interpreting process helps collect and disseminate the information which is edited and distributed to the audience through media.This process is a typical communication process.With China’s progress of opening up and its increasing exchanges with foreign countries,the interpreter plays an irreplaceable role as a bridge between the Chinese people and people from other countries.Interview interpreting,therefore,has also been becoming a co mmon scenario among various interpreting activities.It is hoped that the author’s experience of applying the 5W theory in interpreting practice could provide some practical guidance for future interview interpreting study and training.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter describes the translation task.The second chapter explicitly describes the interpreting process,including a brief assessment of the interpreting work.The third chapter overviews communication theories,introduces the 5W theory,and expounds the relationship between communication and translation,justifying the guiding role of the 5W theory for interview interpreting.The fourth chapter makes a tentative case analysis of the reporter’s interpreting work based on the 5 elements of the 5W theory of communication studies,analyzes existing problems such as the uncertain condition of the interviewees,uncontrollable content of the interview,inadequate language quality and weak foundation of theories,and tries to propose corresponding strategies to improve interview interpreting.The fifth chapter summarizes this practice report,offering suggestions for future interview interpreting of similar kinds.
