A Comparative Study Of Three English Versions Of Jingui Yaolue From The Perspective Of Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation

Jingui Yaolue(also called Synopsis of Prescriptions of Golden Chamber),which has the reputation of “the standard of treating diseases” and “Bible of the Chinese medical books”.It is the earliest monograph on miscellaneous diseases in China.With the development of traditional Chinese medicine in the international arena,the English translation of Jingui Yaolue has gradually become an important research topic in the international exchange and dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine.As the basis of understanding the theory of traditional Chinese medicine in the Jingui Yaolue,the names of diseases and prescriptions have always been the focus of the research.In addition,the disease terms that carry important medical theories,the special phenomenon of the Chinese characters and the literary styles with distinctive classic characteristics in ancient TCM books can also be used as the foothold in the study of the English translation of Jingui Yaolue.The emergence of semantic translation and communicative translation theory has solved many problems since translation activities shifted from the perspective of pure language to the exogenous scope of politics,economy,science and technology,humanities and so forth.As an important translation theory,semantic translation and communicative translation have certain explanatory power and persuasiveness and the theoretical guidance to the translation behavior aiming at cultural communication.This research selects 26 disease terms,20 prescription terms,7 Chinese characters and 6 sentences from the whole book of Jingui Yaolue,and classifies them according to their characteristics,combining with the three English versions of Luo Xi Wen,Ruan Jiyuan and Li Zhaoguo,the thesis makes a comparative analysis on its English translation to explore the interpretation of semantic translation and communicative translation theory to the English translation of Jingui Yaolue,as well as the theoretical guidance for the construction of translation theoretical framework.The research has proved that semantic translation and communicative translation are of great help to enrich the translation theories and expand the translation ideas of TCM and enriching translation methods of it,and to provide experience and reference for subsequent research,so as to promote the promotion and development of TCM culture.
