With the substantial improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength and status, the exchanges in economy, politics and other aspects are becoming closer, and cultural and other spiritual exchanges are have become more frequent. In ancient times, there was the “Silk Road”and now there is the “The Belt and Road”.Traditional Chinese medicine has played an important role in cultural and people-to-people exchanges both in the two Roads.Promoting Chinese medicine culture to go abroad and to the world, and in the background of “going out” of Chinese culture, the role of English translation of traditional Chinese medicine classics appears to be particularly important, especially in the communication of TCM and international medical cultural exchanges. At present, the selection of translating TCM ancient classics is very few,the most famous of which are Huangdi Neijing and Shanghan Lun.The study on the English translation of Jingui Yaolue, which is reputed as “the Canon of Curing Diseases” and “the Canon of Medical Books”,is still in its preliminary stage. However,as the earliest existing book on clinical treatment of miscellany diseases in China,it is important on the study of its English translation, and has great theoretical value and clinical guiding significance. The thesis analyzes the culture of Chinese medicine by taking Jingui Yaolue and its English translation as the research object and using Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory as a guide.Firstly, the three translators’ views on culture awareness and cultural transmission are analyzed from the perspective of translation essence.Although the three are different, they devote to spreading the culture of Chinese medicine.Traditional Chinese medicine culture is the ideal carrier for spreading the image of the country overseas.Secondly, this research compares the culture-loaded words in the three English versions of Luo Xiwen,Li Zhaoguo, and Wiseman from the perspective of cultural functional equivalent translation, and divides the culture-loaded words in Jingui Yaolue into six categories. It focuses on whether the translators can convey the cultural information in the original language and whether it can make the target language readers get close to the culture. Finally, based on the analysis of the above culture-loaded words, the following translation methods are summarized: literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration, borrowing, and annotation. This requires translators to have superb translation skills and rich knowledge of Chinese medicine culture in order to achieve the goal of Chinese culture going out.The analysis shows that translators should regard culture as a translation unit, adopting different translation methods for cultural exchange and communication. The purpose is to achieve the cultural functional equivalence in the target language culture, also is to make the target language readers fully understand TCM classics and Chinese culture Through comparative analysis,it is found that Li Zhaoguo’s translation is the more reasonable version of the three.Based on the translation experience of predecessors,he cleverly combined a variety of translation methods and his own interpretation of Chinese medicine culture,in order to achieve the cultural functional equivalent translation. These methods also provide reference for the subsequent translation of TCM classics and lay the foundation for the standardization of translation of TCM culture-loaded words.
